About Katharine
From an early age Katharine demonstrated a very competitive spirit and natural athletic ability. While in grade school she was consistently the fastest girl in her grade, if not the fastest kid. She played soccer and softball and was always selected for the All Star teams. In fact, she had an uncanny ability to hit the ball and was named the best hitter on her All Star softball team. She was so good at soccer that she was invited to play on the local club soccer team and played with them for years. She also excelled at lacrosse, tennis, cross country, track and karate. In fact, Katharine just broke the school record in the Pole Vault in her first year as a pole vaulter!
In seventh grade, Katharine joined the field hockey team at her school. She had never played before but was so good that she was moved from the seventh grade team to the eighth grade team and was immediately a starter. When she reached high school she was heavily recruited by the cross country coaches who knew she could be a star on the team based on her cross country times in middle school. Because both cross country and field hockey were during the same season in high school Katharine had to choose which sport she was going to play. She chose field hockey. She worked hard and was a standout on the Junior Varsity team her freshman year (there were no freshmen on the Varsity team).
The next year Katharine was one of two sophomores chosen to be on the Varsity Field Hockey team and she made the most of her opportunity. She was immediately made a starter and was an impact player. It was then that Katharine became passionate about field hockey. After her sophomore season she started looking for ways to improve her game. She had gotten by on her natural abilities but really wanted to get better. She played at Festival and CalCup. She joined Arena Leagues. She attended Futures and signed up for RUSH training and camp. Her field hockey skills and knowledge have improved dramatically since her first Varsity game in 2010. She is passionate about field hockey and is excited to play in college.
One of Katharine’s favorite activities is engaging in lively political discussion and debate. Katharine was selected as her school’s delegate to to attend California Girls State in June 2012. She is also an enthusiastic supporter of her school and was elected Spirit Rep her sophomore year. She currently serves as the junior class Secretary/Treasurer. She is a member of the Community Service Initiative club at her school, which does community service projects throughout San Diego. Katharine is also active with the National Charity League, a mother-daughter organization committed to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences.
When she is not busy with school, athletics, and charity work, Katharine enjoys photography, hanging out with her friends, and listening to music. Katharine loves to travel and learn about other cultures. As a sophomore, she took advantage of her school’s exchange program and studied Spanish in Malaga, Spain. In addition, for the past nine years she has spent a month each summer at a camp in Minnesota where she has excelled at horseback riding, riflery, and archery. She has also gained leadership skills at camp that have served her well on the athletic field. Coach Gary Hendrickson recently said of Katharine “In many ways, even as a junior, Katharine led the team in her ability to help her teammates capitalize on their individual strengths.”
